Clutter

Before you can create good room balance, you must get rid of all of the clutter. You must get rid of every item you do not use, do not love and do not need. This is an extremely important step to proper room balance, as you cannot create a harmonious home with clutter everywhere.

Improve Light Quality and Air Quality

There are many ways to improve the light quality and air quality in your home. To start, open your windows often throughout the year. Opening the windows helps to let stale air out. In certain regions, such as the Northeast, where opening the windows is not an option during the colder winter months of the year, consider investing in some house plants. House plants help to purify the air and improve air quality.

As for light, be sure to have plenty of sources of both natural and artificial light. While ideally, natural light is best for a natural feeling, in some situations it may be necessary to incorporate plenty of artificial light. So, have plenty of light fixtures for various needs: overhead lighting, task lighting and so forth.

Determine Your Furniture Arrangement

Arranging your furniture is not as complicated as one may think. There are different ways of arranging your furniture. Each person has different needs and wants, so it is important to choose an arrangement that meets your needs.

Don't pile all of your furniture on one side of the room. Have it evenly spaced out throughout the room. Remember to purchase furniture that is fit to scale. Large items should go in large rooms. Tiny items should go in smaller rooms to create an illusion of space.

Additional Basics of Balance

Color is an important part of balance. It helps to alter the mood from room to room and it is used to balance out the elements.

Art can also be incorporated into balance. Whether it is a piece of wall art or a sculpture, art can aid in increasing your balance.

Last but not least, avoid artificial items and embrace the natural items. For example, wood furniture is ideal over composite or plastic furniture. Living house plants are more beneficial over faux plants. Clay or porcelain flooring or wood flooring is highly preferred to achieve a balanced look over artificial types of flooring, such as vinyl or linoleum.
