Tips for Hanging Wall Art and Other Wall Decor

There are a number of home accessories every home has: throw pillows, table lamps and of course, wall art. In fact, no home decor scheme is complete without a few pieces of wall decor. That being said, hanging wall decor can be a difficult process if you’re unsure of where to start when combining it with your other home accessories and decor. Here are a few tips and tricks for hanging wall art in your home.

Work to Create a Center Point

When hanging wall art, you want the center point of the photograph, painting or other piece of wall decor to be at eye level. It should be at eye level for the average person of the home. This helps make the wall art most easily viewed as you pass through the room, which is important for drawing attention to the artwork itself.

Group Wall Art as a Unit

When using several small pieces of wall art, you’ll want to treat them as if they’re a single piece of wall decor. That means treating and grouping the items as a unit, rather than just throwing them up. Even if you line everything up perfectly to create a grid, you’re still hanging the items as a unit. This helps to give the appearance of a well-planned, well thought-out wall decor.

Consider Wall Size

When choosing wall art to hang in your space, consider the size of the wall as well. For example, when working with narrow walls, you may want to choose a small to medium sized piece or group several small pieces together in an arrangement. Meanwhile, larger walls call for larger pieces of wall art.

Properly Light It

Many times, wall art is hung but never properly displayed. Displaying wall art is more than just hanging it on the wall! You’ll need to properly light the art, which not only helps draw attention to it but also helps you to appreciate the artwork better as you can more easily see the variations in color and so forth.

You can use recessed lights, track lights and wall sconces to help you direct light toward your wall art.

Complimentary Colors

Last but not least, choose wall art that you not only enjoy, but that also compliments the overall design scheme of your home decor. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to choose bland wall art, either. There are plenty of ways to add interest to your space using wall art while still working with your color palette.

Remember, wall art pieces are types of home accessories. That means you don’t necessarily have to choose pieces that are exact duplicates of your current color palette. For example, if you’ve got a contemporary home with a neutral color palette, you can easily incorporate bold, flashy vintage advertisement pieces into the space. There are a number of subdued, muted but still bold vintage wall art that can easily be incorporated into your contemporary decor.

When looking for wall art, be patient. You may not find the right piece right away, but eventually you’ll find the right wall decor for your space.
